Resort to philosophy? Drink to obliteration? Try to live in the moment? He chooses all the above, with indifferent results. Spring and the need to get his boat ready for the king salmon season revive him somewhat, and other persons of the female persuasion provide distraction, but he still cant shake the past. Then the main season begins, and an error of inattention puts him in jeopardy of losing everything. Set in coastal Southeast Alaska and offshore in the open Gulf, West of Spencer draws on the authors long experience in the salmon fishery.

In the wind-driven spray and the blood on the deck, we get a true picture of life onboard, from a rough ride in a near-gale to the peace of quiet anchorages. On the docks, over the boat radios, and in the cafes and bars, the nature of a close-knit working community comes through. We follow the central characters through drinking and profanity and brawling and dancing, love and sex and heartbreak and, due to their dependence on an often deadly ocean, a hit-and-miss search for deeper meaning.

Sometimes it almost seems that theyre making progress.
