Young men hit the roads in search of a better life—something twenty-year-old Emily longs to do as well, except young women don’t have that same freedom. Emily has never been the kind of girl to do the expected- some even call her a bad girl, but really, Emily simply wants more than her small town can offer.

Her grandmother understood that about her, even encouraged her to live a life to be remembered, just like Alice Ramsey had in 1909 when she drove an automobile cross-country. But with her grandmother’s death and the consequences of some unwise decisions, Emily has become trapped in the mundane. Her life is a mess. On a whim, she sticks out her thumb on the new road running through town, climbs into a car with a stranger, and leaves everything she’s known behind.

Without aim or destination, she embarks on an adventure that takes them across the still forming Highway 66, through the legendary Dust Bowl storms to the California cotton fields, all with a man who won’t share details about himself, whether because he’s looking for an escape, or because of some deeper secret, Emily doesn’t know, and frankly doesn’t care. She had to get away, even if it ends up being with a criminal, and even if it ends up being the final in a lifelong string of bad decisions.
